Queeny Purple hollyhock grows so well and strongly that starting seeds indoors isn't usually needed. Plant directly in a sunny spot after the last frost, at the garden's north end, shielding from strong winds. For earlier blooms, start Queeny Purple Mixture seeds inside 10-12 weeks before. Hollyhock seeds may take 21-28 days to sprout with full light. Early plants might need stakes and wind protection. They'll easily reseed yearly. Plant 2-3 Queeny Purple Mixture hollyhock seeds 1/4 inch deep, 12-24 inches apart in average, medium moist, well-drained soil in full sun. While drought-tolerant, avoid watering from above to reduce leaf wetness, as Queeny Purple Mixture can get molds, mildews, rust, leaf spots, and rot without good air flow. No major pests, but check for spider mites and Japanese beetles often. Queeny Purple hollyhock seeds are perennials, maturing in their 2nd year to 18-36 inches tall and 12-24 inches wide, with 3-4 inch feathery "powder puff" blooms in fuchsia, pink, rose, and magenta shades. Plants will reseed freely and stay in your garden as long as you want.
Queeny Purple hollyhock won the 2004 All-American Selection Flower award. Judges noted its "prolific first year flowering" and "season-long" color. Alcea rosea, or Common Hollyhock, is native to many temperate areas in Asia and Europe. In Japan, hollyhock is called aoi and has been key in Japanese history and culture. It was used as the official seal of the Tokugawa Shogunate and remains important in modern Japanese culture. In Victorian times, the hollyhock meant both "ambition" and "fecundity" in the well-known Language of Flowers.
