Provider-
Common Bush beans, as the name suggests, have a more compact growth habit compared to pole beans and do not require climbing or support structures. The type of bush bean can vary between snap, shell, or dry varieties. Due to their self-supporting nature, cultivating bush beans is slightly less demanding than other types.

Pinto-
beans are native to Mexico, and are use in many traditional dishes of this region, including refried beans. Pinto typically take around 90 days to grow as a dry bean, but can be harvested sooner and eaten as a green snap bean. The plants are low growing, runner types that will grow to around 20" tall. Sow seeds 4" apart, with 24-36" between rows and thin as needed. As they are native to subtropical regions, pintos can be sensitive to cold and will grow better in a sandy but fertile loam.

Dragon Tongue-
Dragon Tongue, a variety of bush bean, is an incredibly versatile option. It can be enjoyed as a fresh snap bean or as a shelled bean when it reaches full maturity. To use it as a snap bean, simply wait until the flat beans transition from lime green to buffed yellow with vibrant purple stripes before harvesting. If you prefer dried beans, leave the pods on the plant until they are fully mature. The Dragon Tongue plant typically grows to be around 24-30 inches tall and produces seeds that are light brown with dark mottling; there are approximately 85 seeds per ounce. This particular type of bush bean takes about 60 days to reach its optimal stage for harvesting and consumption.

Fordhook 242 - The Fordhook 242 Bush Lima Bean, a cultivar introduced by the United States Department of Agriculture in Beltsville during the 1940s, stands out as the premier lima bean variety for cultivation in northern regions, coastal environments, or areas characterized by cool, misty evenings. This particular strain exhibits a notably accelerated maturation process, reaching harvest readiness approximately seven days earlier than the majority of bush lima varieties. The plant structure of Fordhook 242 is characterized by its dense foliage, with a height range of 40.64 to 60.96 centimeters (16 to 24 inches). The pods produced by this variety are notable for their substantial thickness and fleshy texture, typically containing between three to five individual lima beans. One of the distinguishing features of the Fordhook 242 is its unique flavor profile, often described as possessing subtle nutty undertones. This characteristic contributes significantly to its culinary appeal. For those seeking a delectable serving suggestion, consider presenting these lima beans in a heated bowl, accompanied by a small portion of butter. This simple preparation method allows for a full appreciation of the bean's inherent flavors and textures.
