Imperial Star is a specially cultivated green artichoke variety that is designed for yearly harvests. This particular type of artichoke is capable of producing fully developed artichokes in its first year from seed. The plants grow to a height of 1 1/2 to 3 feet and have a spreading growth pattern. Each plant typically yields 1 to 2 main buds, which have an average diameter of 3 to 4 inches, as well as 5 to 7 smaller secondary buds. In regions classified as Zone 9 and above, there is a possibility for the artichoke plants to become perennial, while in cooler regions they should be treated as an annual crop.
